When Money Pressure Tries to Define Us

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:12-13

Focus: Lack and abundance are both seasons. Neither one determines our identity.

As I reflected on financial pressure this week, I found myself thinking about two of my closest friends. We have shared more than 30 years of life together—dreams, challenges, celebrations, and seasons when money was tight.

Some of my favorite memories with them weren’t created when we had plenty. They were created when we made the most of what we had.

I remember lunches when we didn’t have enough for a full meal, so we shared what we had. We talked, laughed, and enjoyed one another’s company. One conversation about the crumbs from the table, connected to Scripture, became a memory we still cherish today.

I also remember pursuing an opportunity early in my career when I didn’t have much financially. I had to make an investment in myself before I could see what that investment would produce. I was nervous, uncertain, and didn’t know the outcome. But I took the step.

Looking back now, I can see that those seasons taught me something: having less did not make us less. And not knowing the outcome did not mean we couldn’t take the next faithful step.

Someone can have little and still possess dignity.
Someone can have abundance and still be anxious.
Someone can make a financial mistake without becoming a financial mistake.

Sometimes financial pressure changes more than our circumstances. It can begin to change the way we talk to ourselves.

“I made a mistake” can become “I’m bad with money.”

“I am struggling right now” can become “I’ll always struggle.”

“I need to learn” can become “I should have known this already.”

But there is a difference between acknowledging an area that needs growth and allowing that area to become our identity.

I can acknowledge where I am without allowing where I am to define who I am.

Reflection: “Have I allowed my financial situation to influence how I see myself?”

Prayer: Prayer: Father, Help us remember that our value does not come from what we have or what we do not have. In seasons of abundance and in seasons of need, remind us that our identity is found in You. Lord, sometimes lack can cause people to feel less than. Sometimes comparison can make us believe we are behind. Sometimes mistakes can cause us to speak words over ourselves that You never spoke. Teach us to see ourselves through Your eyes. Help us extend grace to ourselves as we learn, grow, and make better decisions. May we not allow our circumstances to define our worth. Show us where our trust is planted. May we be rooted so deeply in You that changes in our circumstances do not change who we are. Amen.
