Scattering vs. Hoarding: A Biblical Perspective

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops;10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Generosity in Times of Scarcity.

Hello! Today, we’re going to be discussing something that is absolute foolishness to the world. But remember, in God’s economy, everything works differently. And often, it is the exact opposite of the world. So, when the world faces financial uncertainty, they hoard. So, when money is tight, our natural instinct might be to hold on to what we have more tightly.

But in God’s Kingdom, we are encouraged to scatter: Proverbs 11:24 NKJV puts it like this: “There is one who scatters yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.”

This principle of giving first to God, even in times of scarcity, is echoed in Malachi 3:10: “‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.'”

When we give, especially when it doesn’t make sense, it realigns our hearts and reminds us that everything we have comes from God. And when we give, we declare our trust in His provision.

As you navigate financial uncertainty in your life, hold onto the promise in 2 Corinthians 9:8: “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

So today, let’s prayerfully consider how we can honor God with our resources, even if we are in challenging times. Can we set aside a small amount to give? Can we volunteer our skills to help someone else? Anything else come to mind? Remember, generosity isn’t about the size of the gift, but the size of our faith. God’s got you, friend!!

The offering of first fruits was a practice deeply rooted in Israelite tradition, as seen in Leviticus 23:10 and Deuteronomy 26:1-11. It involved giving the first and best portion of the harvest to God, symbolizing trust in His provision for the future. This act of faith was not only a religious duty but also a cultural expression of reliance on God’s continued blessing. The first fruits offering is a type of Christ, who is referred to as the “first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” in 1 Corinthians 15:20, indicating His preeminence and the promise of resurrection for believers. Reflections: Our giving should reflect God’s generosity and love. As we honor Him with our wealth, we become conduits of His blessings to others.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, in these uncertain times, we come to You, acknowledging that You are our ultimate provider and source of security. Help us to trust in Your provision, even when our circumstances feel unstable. Give us wisdom to manage the resources You’ve entrusted to us, courage to be generous even when it’s difficult, and contentment with what we have. Guide our financial decisions, Lord, and help us to honor You in how we earn, spend, save, and give. May our faith in You grow stronger than our fears about the future. We thank You for Your faithfulness and ask for Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
