Pursuing God: How Blessings Follow Obedience

Deuteronomy 28:5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

God’s Blessings are Aggressive

We have already seen how God desires to bless His children, but it is worth a second look to see the intensity of that desire. We often have difficulty in thinking that God does want to bless us, and most of us seldom see the blessings of God as being in the aggressive pursuit of us. However, the reality is that just as God pursues us as the initiator in our salvation, the whole of the blessings of God for us is actively, aggressively in pursuit of us who seek to walk in obedience to God.

In Deuteronomy 28, the entire chapter is devoted to the rewards of obedience to God and the penalty for disobedience to God. In both cases, there is great detail used to describe the when, where, and how of either the blessings or the penalties to be received.

And that is just the beginning. Obedience results in our blessing whether in the city and the country; in the offspring of our body or of our animals and crops; in our basket or our kneading bowl; indoors or outdoors.

The most amazing part of this is what is said about all these blessings in verse 2 of this chapter, “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God.”

A more colloquial way to express this statement while still being accurate in the meaning would be to say, “All these blessings will chase you down and jump on you.” The picture is overtaken from behind by the blessings of God. This conveys to us that God’s blessings are in no way passive or reluctant but rather the opposite. The blessings of God are aggressive in their pursuit of those who walk in obedience to God. There is a relentless determination in the heart of God to bless those who seek to obey His Word. We don’t have to pursue the blessings of God. If we pursue God Himself, His blessings will pursue us.

God’s Word vividly illustrates the power and reach of His blessings, showing us that His rewards for obedience are not only far-reaching but deeply personal. As you continue exploring the scripture found in Deuteronomy, especially chapter 28, take a moment to marvel at the breadth of the blessings promised there. Imagine blessings that cover every corner of life—from your relationships and family to your work and health.

Reflections: These blessings aren’t just broad; they’re lovingly specific, tailored to every area of our lives. Think of it like this: just as we, as parents or caregivers, want the absolute best for our children in every aspect of their lives, God desires the same for us—only to a greater degree. Jesus illustrated this perfectly when He said, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him” (Matthew 7:11).

As you reflect on these passages, consider how God’s blessings are designed to encompass every part of your life. Let this inspire gratitude and trust, knowing that He is always seeking ways to pour out goodness upon you.

Prayer: Dear God, I pray for prosperity and abundance in my life. Open doors of opportunity and create pathways for financial growth. Grant me wisdom to manage my resources effectively and to invest wisely. Help me to achieve financial freedom and stability.

I ask that You bless the work of my hands and guide me in my endeavors. Let Your favor be upon me, and may I prosper in all that I do. I believe in Your power to transform my financial situation and to lead me to prosperity. In Your Son’s Name, Amen.
