Gratitude as a Way of Life: Practicing Biblical Thankfulness

Let Christ’s peace rule in your hearts. As members of one body, you were called to peace. Be thankful. Let Christ’s message fill you with wisdom as you teach and encourage one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing to God with grateful hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father. Colossians 3:15–17

Gratitude is more than an emotion or an annual tradition; it is a way of life. Every decision, word, and action can express our thanks to God. As believers, we are called to reflect His love in all we do and to continually thank Him for His grace.

Gratitude touches every area of life. When we face challenges, relationships, and finances with thankful hearts, we draw closer to God’s purpose. If we lived out Colossians 3:17 throughout the year, how might our outlook change? Our daily actions would become ongoing expressions of gratitude and love for God.

Ingratitude can blind us in two ways:

(1) We often forget to thank God for watching over us. Because we tend to see only what is immediately before us, we can miss the ways He is working everything together for our good. Even difficult experiences can build our character. When we view them through spiritual eyes, we can recognize how God is using them to prepare us for the future.

(2) We fail to recognize the good God has done for us. We forget the times He protected us, the wise decisions the Holy Spirit guided us to make, and the greatest gift of all: salvation through Christ.

So what can we do about complaining? The opposite of complaining is thankfulness. I think of thankfulness as the oil of the Spirit. Just as oil keeps an engine running, thankfulness helps keep our spiritual lives healthy. Remove the oil, and the engine stops. Remove thankfulness, and our spiritual lives begin to struggle.

We need to refocus our eyes. Good is always present somewhere. No matter how difficult our circumstances may seem, hope is always there.

As we gather this Thanksgiving, let’s look more deeply into the true meaning of gratitude. Let’s ground our thankfulness in biblical truth, remember God’s unfailing love, find contentment in every situation, and allow our whole lives to reflect genuine gratitude.

Complaining has a harmful effect; it sends the wrong messages to God and shows ingratitude toward Him.

Reflections: Throughout the Bible, this theme recurs. From the Israelites who praised Him after their Red Sea crossing to David’s melodic Psalms, the message is clear: in every season, God’s love remains, and for that, we give thanks.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want my life to express gratitude in every word, action, and thought. In every challenge and joy, help me recognize Your blessings and grace. May my life reflect Your love and kindness in every interaction. Help me live beyond the feast and carry a thankful heart each day. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
