GROW Bible Study Recap

When Fear Challenges Our Trust

Scripture: Exodus 14:12–14

Continuing the Journey Together

We began our GROW gathering with a time of intercession and prayer, thanking God for His mercy and reflecting on His faithfulness toward the Israelites. It was a meaningful opportunity to settle our hearts and come together in His presence before returning to our study of Exodus 14.

When Fear Challenges Our Faith

As we continued examining Israel’s experience, we discussed the seriousness of their struggle to trust God despite the signs, wonders, and miracles they had witnessed. One participant observed that we can do the same thing today. We can remember God’s goodness and faithfulness and still find ourselves struggling to trust Him when a new challenge appears.

That led us to consider a practical question:

How do we stand firm when we are afraid?

Several thoughts emerged from the group. We can recount past victories and remember the times God has shown Himself faithful. We can also recognize that sometimes courage requires us to face what frightens us rather than retreat from it.

As we reflected on Israel standing before the Red Sea, we considered how what they saw affected what they believed was possible. The approaching danger intimidated them, and fear influenced their response.

We brought that question closer to home:

What is our Red Sea? What are we facing that has caused us to become afraid?

Our circumstances may be different from Israel’s, but we, too, can become overwhelmed by what is in front of us. We discussed how fear can intimidate us, affect our perspective, and make retreat seem more appealing than moving forward.

We were reminded of the words of Scripture: “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, KJV).

Walking by faith does not mean pretending that the challenge is not real. It means learning not to let what we see become the only thing that determines our response. We can acknowledge our fears, surrender them to God, remember His faithfulness, and seek His direction for the next step.

Looking Beyond What We See

We discussed how God instructed Moses to act and told the people to move forward. This reminded us that trusting God does not always mean remaining still indefinitely. There are moments to stand firm, moments to pray, and moments when God directs us to take action.

That observation gave us another perspective on their experience. God was not simply bringing a people out of bondage; He was developing them into a people who would learn to follow Him.

We also considered how the Israelites had become familiar with life in Egypt and how familiarity can lead to complacency. Even after leaving Egypt, they still had much to learn about trusting God and following His direction.

What Are We Learning Together?

Our discussion reminded us that deliverance and formation are not the same thing. God had brought Israel out of Egypt, but their experiences continued to reveal areas where their trust needed to grow.

We can recognize something similar in our own lives. We may have witnessed God’s faithfulness and still struggle when faced with something unfamiliar or frightening. Those moments can become opportunities to examine our responses, remember what God has done, and grow in our understanding of what it means to trust Him.

We continued reading through Exodus 14:12–13 and began verse 14. We will return to the passage next month, giving ourselves time to explore the richness of the text rather than rushing through it.

Reflection question: What is your Red Sea moment, and how might remembering God’s faithfulness help you face it with courage?

At GROW, we are learning not only to read Scripture, but to ask questions, listen to one another, understand the Word, and consider how it shapes the way we live.
