Hope 1 Ministries | Hope 4 Kids: Ready to Learn Initiative

Over the years, God has been teaching Hope 1 Ministries a new rhythm of serving. It began in neighborhood parks, sharing books with children and encouraging families. During the pandemic, that rhythm changed as new doors opened through the community garden and local food pantries. Week after week, we kept showing up. Slowly, names became familiar. Conversations grew into relationships. Children began to recognize us, and parents learned they could trust us.

This summer wasn’t the beginning of those relationships—it was the first full season where we could clearly see the rhythm God had been building all along.

As a teacher working inside the school system, I began seeing another side of the back-to-school season. I saw the anxiety families experienced trying to prepare their children. I saw parents overwhelmed by the cost of supplies and uniforms.

But I also saw something else.

I saw supplies that were unused.

I saw materials being discarded at the end of the school year.

I even had schools give me items they were preparing to throw away because they were no longer needed.

Those moments caused me to ask:

How can we serve in a way that reduces waste and meets real needs?

This summer, our answer began to become clearer.

Through our food pantry partnerships, we didn’t just meet families—we built relationships.

We learned names.

We met children.

We listened to parents.

We discovered needs beyond what we could see from a distance.

Instead of waiting for families to come to a large back-to-school event, we now have an opportunity to return to the families we have already met.

This changes the way we serve. “This year, we aren’t just collecting school supplies. We’re caring for children whose names we know.”
