Summer Field Notes: The Field Became Our Classroom
Over the past several weeks, I’ve found myself reflecting on something unexpected. I thought this summer would be about serving our community. Instead, God has been teaching us while we serve.
The field has become our classroom. As we prepared for our Operation Love Summer Outreach, we prayed, packed food, organized clothing, and gathered personal care items. We thought we were simply preparing to meet practical needs. But what we discovered was something much deeper.
The food wasn’t the destination. The clothing wasn’t the destination. The personal care items weren’t the destination. They became the gateway.
They opened the door to conversations, relationships, prayer, encouragement, and opportunities to share the hope found in Jesus Christ. One conversation reminded me that every person carries a story. Another reminded me that sometimes people need someone to simply listen. Another reminded me that God often works through ordinary moments that we could easily overlook.
This summer has also refined my understanding of evangelism. For years, I wrestled with questions like, “How many people got saved?” While we rejoice whenever someone places their faith in Christ, I’ve come to understand that our responsibility is to faithfully represent Jesus Christ wherever He leads us. We cannot change hearts. Only God can do that. But we can love. We can listen. We can pray. We can serve. We can faithfully share the hope of the Gospel as the Holy Spirit opens the door.
One passage that has continually shaped my thinking is Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). Jesus didn’t begin with a sermon. He began with a simple conversation: “Give Me a drink.” That ordinary request opened the door to an extraordinary encounter. What began as a conversation about water became an invitation to discover the Living Water.
That is the heart behind Hope 1 Ministries. We don’t serve people to recruit them. We serve because Christ first loved us. We build relationships because people matter. We share the Gospel because Jesus is our hope. And we trust God to do what only He can do. As I reflected on this summer, one simple truth kept returning to my heart:
Because One Person Matters. Every conversation matters. Every prayer matters. Every act of kindness matters. Every opportunity to faithfully represent Christ matters. This is the beginning of a new series called The Hope 1 Way: Summer Field Notes. Throughout the summer, I’ll be sharing lessons God is teaching us while serving in our neighborhoods, food pantries, senior communities, and outreach events.
My prayer is that these reflections encourage you to recognize that ministry isn’t confined to a church building or a mission trip. It often begins with an ordinary conversation, an act of compassion, or a willingness to simply be present. You don’t have to have all the answers. You simply have to be willing to follow Jesus. Because one conversation may become someone’s first step toward hope. Because one act of love may restore someone’s dignity. Because one faithful witness can point someone toward Christ. Because one person matters.
The Hope 1 Way–“To love people well, faithfully bear witness to Jesus Christ, and give God all the glory for every life He transforms.”

Reflection: Where is God inviting you to faithfully represent Christ this week? Perhaps it’s not through a large event, but through one ordinary conversation with one person He places in your path.
