Exodus 13:17–22 After Pharaoh sent the people out, God did not take them by the coastal road that runs through the land of the Philistines, even though that was the nearest and easiest route. Instead, God said, “For if they see battle with those contentious Philistines, they might regret their decision and then return to Egypt.”
Reflection
At Hope 1, we have been talking about courage. Not just the kind that looks bold on the outside…But the kind that requires you to trust God when the path does not make sense.
In this passage, God intentionally leads the Israelites the longer way. Not because He didn’t know a shorter route…
But because He knew what they were not yet ready for.
Real-Life Connection (Hope 1)
This is where many of us are right now.
We have stepped out.
We have said yes.
We are moving forward.
But the path…
👉 Doesn’t look like what we expected.
- Things are unfolding slower than we thought
- Some steps feel unclear
- We find ourselves asking, “God, is this really You?”
Even in Hope 1, there are moments where what is happening doesn’t look like what we planned.
But that does not mean God is not leading.
Formation Insight
God was not just trying to get the Israelites to a destination.
👉 He was forming them into a people who could walk with Him.
And formation often happens in:
- The unfamiliar
- The unexpected
- The in-between spaces
Because courage is not just about moving…
👉 It is about trusting God’s leadership when you don’t recognize the path.
God did not leave them without guidance. He gave them:
- A pillar of cloud by day
- A pillar of fire by night
They didn’t have the full picture…But they had His presence.
What This Means for Us
You may not understand the direction. You may not see how it all fits together.
But if God is leading…
👉 You are not off track.
