Every Breath We Take

One day the Eternal God scooped dirt out of the ground, sculpted it into the shape we call human, breathed the breath that gives life into the nostrils of the human, and the human became a living soul.

Voice Translation Genesis 2:7

Every breath we take, in every waking and sleeping moment of our lives, was initiated by the first breath of God into Adam in the garden. When God gave Adam his first breath, He shaped humanity with the power of His presence and His Spirit. Stop where you are to imagine that moment. How God shaped the clay into the form of a man and breathed His very life-giving Spirit into Adam.

. . . breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. —The life came not as the result of man’s bodily organisation, nor as derived by evolution from any other animal, but as a gift direct from God -Bible Hub. Don’t you wish the moment was captured for us to see? What did Adam see when he first opened his eyes and what did he say after that first breath?

We breathe the breath of God! Have you ever considered that every breath taken by humanity became automated in that very moment? Every breath each person in the world breathes, from the moment they’re born until their final breath, was initiated in the garden. Every breath, ever, is an utterance of your Creator’s name!

When human body meets divine spirit, soul is born. Divine breath and sculpted earth come together to make up the living soul. For thousands of years, philosophers and theologians have posed the question: what is a human being? Here God gives the answer.

Genesis 2 Voice Translation

Daily Prayer: God, I am amazed at the power of Your breath. That in one moment, You brought humanity to life and that You sustain the whole creation by Your Spirit. As I go about my day, help me to be aware that every breath I take I am breathing in Your presence. May I be aware of You and Your goodness today.

Daily Action & Reflection: Did you know that something as simple as breathing slowly could relieve pressure and stress? Take a moment (right now!) and take several deep breaths very slowly in and out. Now closes your eyes, clear your mind, and do it once more. It’s truly relaxing. From this point forward when you feel overwhelmed or stressed, pause and take several deep breaths before continuing on.
