Fight for your families: Building in the Midst of Battle

Nehemiah 4:14 “After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, ‘Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.’”

Building in the Midst of Battle: Nehemiah’s call to action. Rebuilding the wall is not simply a physical task—it is a spiritual act of war. It is no coincidence that Nehemiah was called to rebuild in Kislev, the Jewish month known for the development of prophetic insight and divine tactics. In the same way, we must not rebuild blindly; we must rebuild with strategy.

Kislev reminds us that the work of restoration involves more than just bringing order; it is also about protection. Walls do more than enhance beauty; they provide safety. Broken walls benefit the enemy, as a scattered people are easier to intimidate, discourage, and distract. When God calls His people to repair the breaches, He equips them for the battles that lie ahead. Just as Nehemiah confronted Sanballat and Tobiah, we too will encounter mocking voices, spiritual resistance, and internal pressure—but we must not retreat.

This is an active season, a time for focused warfare. There’s a saying: “We are not waiting for the enemy to come to our camp; instead, we have gone into his.” Our commitment to build places us in direct opposition to darkness. However, our warfare is not physical; our weapons are powerful through God. Praise is our battle cry, and worship is our war drum. Focused worship, which involves declaring who God is in the face of adversity, serves as our strategy.

The enemy will try to convince you that your efforts are weak, your prayers are ineffective, and your dreams are foolish. He mocks us in the darkest hours, whispering lies about your progress and power. However, when you stand in focused worship, declaring Jehovah Nissi, El Shaddai, and Jehovah Sabaoth, you engage in divine warfare. You are not merely worshiping; you are battling with the truth.

In this season, God is calling you to rebuild with intention. Focus on rebuilding your personal walls, your family walls, and the walls around the body of Christ. As you undertake this work, remember that resistance does not mean you are wrong; it means you are rebuilding something that threatens the enemy.

Let your faith be louder than your fear. Let your strategy be worship. Let your strength be found in standing firm.

Reflection:

  • In what ways has the enemy tried to mock or discourage your restoration efforts?
  • Choose three names of God that personally resonate with your current battle (e.g., Jehovah Nissi – The Lord My Banner; El Roi – The God Who Sees Me; Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is Peace). Each day this week, begin your day by declaring these names aloud in prayer and praise. Make focused worship your first line of defense.

Prayer: God, many things in the world can make us afraid. Help us to remember that You are on our side and that Your love can drive out fear (1 John 4:18). Help me defend those things that are important in a Christ-like way. Amen.
