Deuteronomy 7:7-9- The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
This Scripture is addressed to Israel, not specifically to Christians. God, in His grace, chose a small, seemingly insignificant nation to experience His presence, witness His power, hear His voice, and represent Him to the world. However, through His grace, God has included us in this story as well. Peter writes in 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.” We are now also considered God’s chosen people. Our relationship with God parallels Israel’s, but we have the added understanding of what Jesus did for us and the gift of the Holy Spirit, which makes our relationship even more meaningful.
God has set His affection on us, chosen us, redeemed us, and will remain faithful to us—all of which we did not earn or deserve. It is all a gift of God’s grace. As you read the Scripture again, take time to revel in the grace that God has extended to you.
Additionally, in His grace, God has given you a leadership role in His work. This opportunity is not something we earn; it is yet another gift of grace. Therefore, do not think that you need to force things to happen for God. Instead, focus on joining Him in the work He is already doing.
We cannot earn God’s love, but God Himself is the Source of love (1 John 4:8), and He gives it to us in mercy. Thank God today for His love and mercy!

Reflection: The Israelites moved away from God’s grace because they began to believe that God owed them blessings through their effort. This is very easy to do in leadership.
- What practices will help you continue to enjoy and celebrate God’s grace in the long term?
Prayer: Prayer: Lord, I understand that you have not chosen me as your child because I am better or more talented than others. You have loved me from the beginning of time, and by your grace, you have saved me. You have now called me to join you in your work by influencing others. May I always remember that this is your work, not mine. Help me to delight in the wonder of your grace as I lead in your way and with your strength.
