John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
This week, we will continue our discussion on Bible verses about the heart. The heart is often seen as the core of our being, symbolizing our emotions, intentions, and actions. Throughout the Bible, we find many verses that encourage us to examine our hearts because it is from our hearts that our thoughts and actions emerge. Understanding the heart’s role in our faith can transform our lives, urging us to align our desires with God’s will. Let’s explore these verses together and see what scripture teaches us about the heart. We invite you to meditate on each verse and allow its meaning to resonate deeply within you.“Listen in silence because if your heart is full of other things, you cannot hear the voice of God.”
The Heart in Times of Trouble. When the Bible speaks of our heart, it doesn’t mean our anatomical heart, which beats and pumps blood through our body. It refers, rather, to the metaphysical center of who we are. The heart is the place from which our being, our awareness, hopes and desires are all birthed. It is the place from which we believe, and what we believe determines how we behave. From this place inside ourselves, we truly worship.
Jesus alone is our source of truth. He alone can authoritatively give our heart what it needs. He alone can legitimately instruct us on what we should believe. We were made to worship Him and to find peace and fulfilment in following Him. When Jesus says, “do not let your hearts be troubled,” He exercises spiritual insight and authority into our human condition.
Fear and lies go hand-in-hand. Our enemy, the devil, loves to lie to us and leave us feeling insecure and afraid. When confronted with fear we must go to Jesus, seeking to hear the truth He speaks authoritatively over our fears, letting His truth disarm the lies that we have taken into our heart. Then, we need to be brave and walk in faith, to take action, demonstrating that we believe God’s truth over the lies of the enemy.
Jesus acknowledges the importance of our heart and empathises with what it means to be human. He understands what it means to experience uncertainty, temptation, insecurity, fear and anxiety. So, when He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me”, He is showing us where to find peace for our weary heart and inviting us into a place of rest under His sovereign authority.
Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Reflections: Life presents us with challenges that can weigh heavily on our hearts. The Bible encourages us to seek refuge and strength in God during difficult times. Finding solace in Scripture provides comfort and hope, allowing our hearts to experience peace amidst life’s storms. By relying on God’s promises, we cultivate resilience and maintain faith through trials, enabling us to emerge stronger.
- This week we will begin to focus on the Heart’s Emotional Functions. The emotional state of the heart affects the rest of a person: “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit” (Prov 15:13 ); “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” ( 17:22 ).
Prayer: Philippians 4:5-7:Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
