I Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Greatness from God’s perspective is defined by how we help and add value to people—it’s not being the best… it’s being your best!
Friends, the foundation of greatness is having a godly character. In life, we can’t control certain things—where we’re born, the family we’re born into—but beyond that, our choices shape who we become. Our character is the result of all the choices we make. Each time we make the right choice, we build a godly character.
While the world places emphasis on charisma and talent, God looks at us and first asks, “What’s on the inside of that person?” God looks at our inner character. Let’s be intentional with our choices today, to build the right character on the inside. Here are four power statements that have helped me create healthy habits, make the right choices, and live intentionally:
- Without character, we do what’s easiest. With character, we do what’s right.
- Without character, we are controlled by our moods and environments. With character, we are controlled by values.
- Without character, we look for excuses. With character, we look for solutions.
- Without character, we quit when we’re challenged. With character, we persevere when challenged.
I pray these four choices help you build the right character!

Reflections: As you engage with God’s Word, ask yourself the following questions:
- What is God saying to me?
- What does it mean to me?
- How can I apply what God is teaching me?
- How can I be specific in prayer today?
- After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
Prayer: Lord, please help me persevere toward Christlikeness while supporting others who are doing the same. Help me draw nearer to the likeness of my dear Lord Jesus and empower me to represent Him better each day.
