Understanding the Heart’s Role in Spiritual Growth

The Lord saw that the wickedness (depravity) of man was great on the earth and that every imagination or intent of the thoughts of his heart were only evil continually. Genesis 6:5

The human heart is not just a muscle that pumps blood; it holds our feelings, thoughts, and desires. In the Bible, the heart represents who we truly are, reflecting our faith and values. Understanding what the Bible says about our hearts can help us grow in our relationship with God and make better choices in our lives.

This month, we will share devotionals that focus on the heart. These devotionals are intended to encourage you to reflect on the significance of having a pure and loving heart. They remind us that God sees our hearts and desires for us to fill them with kindness, faith, grace, and hope.

Philosophers say that the heart is the first thing that lives and the last thing that dies. I believe that this aligns closely with science. It is at the first heartbeat that a baby truly begins to live. A human can lose many organs and still survive. However, once the heart stops, that person is gone, and this is spiritually similar. The posture of your heart determines the direction of your life. Therefore, to control and influence your life, you must influence your heart.

God says you are to guard your heart with all diligence because all the issues of life including the course of your life, flow from your heart. If you do not like the course of your life or the problems flowing in your life, then check your heart. To keep your mind from vanity, your understanding from error, your conscience from guilt and stain, your affections from becoming inordinate, and to keep your life from mediocrity, you need to guard your heart. An anonymous quote reads, “Sow a thought, reap a deed. Sow a deed, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.”

People are often consumed by destiny—seeking to achieve and fulfill a great one. However, it is your thoughts that shape your actions. Your actions reflect your habits. Your habits define your character. And your character shapes your destiny. Instead of becoming overly focused on your destiny, you should concentrate more on your thoughts, as they will ultimately determine your fate. What thoughts reside in your heart?

This walk is a ‘heart-walk.’ The state of the heart is so unbelievably vast that God destroyed an entire civilization because they had a heart problem. Please read Genesis 6:5. The question is, how is your heart, and how are you guarding it?

Anyone might see that the wickedness of man was great: but God saw that every imagination, or purpose, of the thoughts of man’s heart, was only evil continually. This was the bitter root, the corrupt spring. The heart was deceitful and desperately wicked; the principles were corrupt; the habits and dispositions evil. Bible Hub
