Ephesians 4:29-32 –Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak]…
Taming the Tongue: Cultivating Kindness and Wisdom
The tongue, while small, is powerful in its impact. Proverbs 18:21 tells us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” So why is it so hard to say the right thing at the right time? James writes, “If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body” (ESV). Today, focus on the destructive power of an untamed tongue and the importance of using words wisely. Reflect on how wise words stimulate healing while harsh words stir up anger and pain.
Today, let’s take some time to examine our recent conversations. Were they marked by honesty and love, or are there areas where we need to grow? I don’t know about you, but I can use work in this area of my life every day.
Commit to using your words to build others up today, being mindful of how you speak. Remember, taming the tongue is a lifelong journey, so give yourself some slack when you fail. Continue to seek God’s help and guidance in using your words to bring life and blessing to others.
Now consider how your words may have impacted others recently. Were they uplifting or damaging? Pause momentarily and ask God for wisdom and self-control in every conversation, especially with those closest to you.
Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much. – Blaise Pascal

Reflections: Every day, in everything we do, you and I are representatives of Christ and His kingdom. But what are people seeing when they are around us? Do we act selfishly? Do we get angry in response to things we don’t like? Do we sow discord among those around us? Or do we illustrate God’s kindness by being kind?
- What specific thing can you do to show kindness to someone today?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your abundant grace and forgiveness in my life. Help me to speak truth, to manage my anger righteously, and to use my words for good. Teach me to be kind, compassionate, and quick to forgive, just as You have forgiven me. Holy Spirit, guide me in all my relationships and interactions, that I may reflect the love of Christ to those around me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
