Transforming Pride into Grace Through Humility

I Peter 5:5-6Likewise, you younger men [of lesser rank and experience], be subject to your elders [seek their counsel]; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another [tie on the servant’s apron], for God is opposed to the proud [the disdainful, the presumptuous, and He defeats them], but He gives grace to the humble…

Through the death and resurrection of Christ, we have access to a constant stream of grace when we fall short of His perfection. The only thing we have to do to receive His grace is accept it—and that requires humility. In 1 Peter 5:5-6, we’re not commanded to be humble at certain times or with certain people; we’re commanded to clothe ourselves with humility. And when we choose to live in humility instead of pride, we are promised grace.

We should find great assurance knowing that we can literally give any and all worries to God. His devoted compassion toward His children is in His nature. He not only desires that we cast our anxieties on Him, but He also commands that we do so. Part of humbling ourselves before Him means bringing our deepest concerns to Him.

The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.

Timothy Keller

Reflections:  Humility preserves peace and order in all Christian churches and societies; pride disturbs them. Where God gives grace to be humble, he will give wisdom, faith, and holiness.

Prayer:  Dear God, I don’t want to let my pride keep me from experiencing the riches of Your grace. Help me choose humility instead of pride and continually accept Your grace with a grateful heart.
