What Defines a Good Leader? Key Traits Explained

Matthew 20:26-28, He said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

What Does It Mean to Be a Leader?

So, what is a leader? John Maxwell has a famous quote about leadership. He says, “A leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” From this quote, it’s easy to see that a great leader is someone who has gone down a particular path. They know the correct way to go, and they’re willing to act as a guide for others to follow. That leader might not be the most eloquent or outgoing, but they are willing to risk it all to show people there’s a better way.

The Role of Character in Leadership

Character in leadership is not merely about personal morality but is integral to the effectiveness and impact of a leader. The Bible consistently portrays leaders whose character aligns with God’s standards as those who bring about positive change and lead their people toward God’s purposes. The emphasis on character serves as a reminder that leadership is a sacred trust, requiring leaders to mirror God’s character in their actions and decisions.
