How to Ask God for Help in Temptation

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

We should not hold our heads down in defeat but instead approach life boldly and with great freedom. We haven’t sinned yet. The word “boldly” is derived from the Greek noun parresia. It means to speak openly, courageously, and confidently. It also denotes speaking with full assurance and without any reservations.

When are we to come boldly into the presence of Jesus? These two verses (Hebrews 4:15-16) focus on one specific situation. It happens when we are being tempted and need some supernatural assistance.

The logic is straightforward:  Because Jesus was “tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Our High Priest “sympathizes with our weaknesses.” Hence, we have a highly understanding person to ask for help.

The verse encourages us to approach the throne of grace. It tells us to “obtain” something we recognize we can’t achieve on our own. The term “obtain” refers to claiming something for oneself or taking hold of something useful. Acknowledging our weaknesses, we realize we need inner strength and courage that exceed our own capabilities. So, we seek assistance from our powerful Savior.

We are to come with reverence and godly fear, yet not as if dragged to the seat of justice, but as kindly invited to the mercy-seat, where grace reigns. We have boldness to enter into the holiest only by the blood of Jesus; he is our Advocate, and has purchased all our souls want or can desire. Bible Hub

The scripture encourages us to seek Jesus for two essential blessings. These blessings can help us in facing difficult temptations: mercy and grace. We need mercy to stop the temptation. At the very least, we aim to lessen its hold on us. We also need grace. It provides the strength needed to ultimately conquer these temptations effectively.

God invites us to open up about our fears, pain, and worries. He is more than equipped to handle everything we face.

Faith and trust go hand in hand. By inviting God into our circumstances, we can let go and allow Him to work things out for our good. We put our trust in the One who is truly trustworthy.

Reflections: So, what should you do the next time you are tempted to sin? Realize you haven’t sinned yet. You are completely innocent. Come run to the Throne of Christ and say, “HELP!” You don’t need a long prayer—you just need to ask for one thing—HELP in a time of need! Ask without shame or hesitation, ask boldly in faith, and you will get the help you need.

Prayer: Lord, help me to experience a renewed assurance that can only be found in You. May the confidence of the King who lives within me fill my heart with unwavering faith. May it also fill it with trust and confidence in God. I am on a mission to pursue You, Lord. I ask for Your guidance as I surrender completely. I fully depend on You as I work diligently. Help me to find peaceful rest in Your presence. Amen!
