The Role of Gratitude in Experiencing God’s Peace

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

Paul mentions being thankful five times in Colossians. “We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Col. 1:3). “May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father.” (Col. 1:12). “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” (Col. 2:7).

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” (Col. 3:15), “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” (Col. 4:2). Notice that a spirit of thankfulness is always part of the relationship we share. It is a primary part of our interaction with Abba/Father.

To experience peace, it’s essential to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. This means making a conscious decision to focus on peace in our lives and to reject anything that disrupts it.

Here are some practical steps to help cultivate peace:

  1. Daily Time with God: Spend time each day in prayer, reading the Bible, and meditating on God’s promises. This helps to center your mind and heart on Him, rather than on your circumstances.
  2. Practice Gratitude: Thank God for His blessings, even in the midst of difficulties. Gratitude shifts your focus from what is wrong to what is right. It helps you to see God’s hand in every situation.
  3. Surrender Control: Acknowledge that you can’t control everything and trust God with the outcomes. This release of control is crucial for experiencing peace.
  4. Guard Your Mind: Be mindful of what you allow into your thoughts. Avoid dwelling on negative or fearful thoughts, and instead, fill your mind with the truth of God’s Word.
  5. Seek Community: Surround yourself with other believers. They can encourage you and pray for you. They help you stay focused on God’s peace.

The “peace of God” will thus calm down every agitated element of the soul; subdue the tumult of passion, and preserve the mind in healthful action and order – as a ruler sways and controls the passions of assembled multitudes of people.-Bible Hub

Reflection: In a chaotic world, true peace is found only in God. It is a peace that transcends circumstances. It is a peace that guards our hearts and minds. This peace comes from trusting in God’s promises. We will experience the deep, abiding peace that only God can give. To achieve this, we need to seek Him daily. We should surrender our worries and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us.

  • Contemplate over this past week and think of at least 3 things you are thankful for. Write them down. Say them out loud. Share them with friends. Express your thankfulness for these things with God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your peace. In the midst of life’s chaos, help me to fix my eyes on You, trusting in Your goodness and faithfulness. Teach me to surrender my anxieties and fears to You, and fill me with the peace that transcends all understanding. Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts and actions. Help me walk in step with You. May I experience Your peace each day. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
