“What does spiritual authority look like in our lives today?” The question of authority is a fundamental issue facing every person, especially the believer. Its significance cannot be overestimated. Every person has an authority in life that he or she submits to as a subordinate, not by constraint but by conviction. Furthermore, God has created human beings to live under his authority. When they choose to live under a different rule, that of self or an idol, they sin. This is, in a simple summary, the teaching of (Genesis 1-3). That portion of Scripture illustrates the human tendency, moved by pride, to seek independence from external authority and to establish self as the final authority in life.

Effective discipleship is built on a godly message, a godly manner, and a godly motive.

•  Contrasting Worldly Power with Godly Authority The difference between worldly power and spiritual authority is stark. Worldly power often seeks to dominate and control, whereas spiritual authority is grounded in love and servanthood. Jesus taught in Matthew 20:25-26, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them…yet it shall not be so among you.” This calls you to a higher standard, where authority is exercised with humility and compassion.
• The Seduction of Worldly Authority The lure of worldly authority can be subtle and dangerous. 1 John 2:16 warns, “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” Be vigilant in discerning when the exercise of authority is influenced more by worldly standards than by Godly principles.
• Aligning Authority with God’s Purposes Your ultimate aim in exercising authority should be to align with God’s purposes. Romans 13:1 states, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God.” Reflect on how your understanding and application of authority can be a reflection of your submission to God’s sovereign will.

• Navigating Life with Scriptural Authority Life presents complex challenges and decisions. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This metaphor beautifully illustrates how Scripture provides the wisdom and guidance you need to navigate life’s journey under God’s authority.
• Defending the Faith with Biblical Authority In a world filled with competing ideologies, the authority of Scripture equips you to defend your faith. 1 Peter 3:15 urges, “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you.” Understanding and articulating your beliefs based on the authority of God’s Word is essential in your witness as a Christian.

God can use our authority and our abundance and our promotion. But before He can, we need to humble ourselves before God’s might hand.
