The Bible As The Ultimate Authority

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

II Timothy 3:16-17

As a believer, you recognize the Bible as the ultimate source of spiritual authority. 2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭KJV‬‬ asserts, all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” This reinforces the role of Scripture in guiding every aspect of your life and faith.

The word-perfect means “complete” or “adequately prepared,” and “thoroughly,” of course, means “thoroughly.” Ponder those verses until they become a part of your inner person. This is what true Bible study is all about. Life is transformed when God’s Word is in control.

All Scripture is given by God. His Word is intentional. His Word is exact. His Word is infallible. Every aspect of the Word is profitable for every season and aspect of your life. The Amplified Version expounds upon ‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭AMPC‬‬ in the following manner, “Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action), So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”His Word is Life.

His Word is God-breathed. Every aspect of the Word of God has the Power to transform your life—if you allow it to. The Word is transformative and beneficial for training in righteousness and in Holy Living. In fact, the New Living Translation expounds upon 2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”His Word equips. His Word corrects. His Word leads. His Word guides. His Word directs. His Word uplifts. His Word teaches. His Word orders our steps.

The Message Bible puts it this way, “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” 2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭14‬-‭17‬ ‭MSG‬‬.

This blessed Book brings such life and health and peace, and such an abundance that we should never be poor any more.

– Smith Wigglesworth

In those few words in 2 Timothy 3:16–17, Paul told young Timothy how to treat the inspired Word of God. I don’t know of any other summary that states so clearly the goals of Bible study. If studying the Scriptures teaches me sound doctrine, convicts me of what is wrong in my life, and shows me how to correct my errors and not repeat them, then I want to be a good student of the inspired Word of God. Our personal goal is spiritual maturity, being adequately equipped by the Lord to serve Him as the Holy Spirit enables us to know and to do the will of God. We want to glorify Him and minister to others as the Lord directs. Many self-help books line the shelves today, but none of them can claim to be inspired by the God of the universe as is the Bible, nor can they claim to be inerrant, living, and powerful (Heb. 4:12).

The essence of the Christian life is the Word of God. No one is strong enough to face the pressures, struggles, and challenges of faith without the power of God’s Word. Parents teach the Word of God so their children have fear of God. Only through the Word of God can the young people be able to pursue the purpose of life in accordance to the will of God. Professionals, servants of God, even anyone, need the word of God to remain in the truth. This is the proof that God’s Word not only enables us to keep going but also enables us to know and understand the heart of God himself.

The Protestant Mission Agency records at least 100 million Bibles sold annually around the world. Although the Bible has been tried several times to be eliminated, it never works. That’s how the power of God is so real that all men may know Him through His Word; “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)

Reflections: One way we can get to know God right and deeper is through the Scripture. The Word of God is like a compass that will show us the direction to take. If our goal is eternity with the Lord Jesus, then start loving the Word of God all the time. The Scripture will teach, rebuke, correct and instruct us in righteousness. If we long to know God, let’s start by loving His Word in our Bible now.

  1. What have been the biggest barriers you have faced to enjoying the Bible? Why?
  2. Spend some time thanking God for the creativity and beauty in His Word.
