Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Mathe 19:21
Poverty Awareness Month is observed in January every year. This important endeavor is observed in America all month long. Did you know that the U.S. ranks second highest in poverty rates among its peer countries? Poverty Awareness Month is about taking an opportunity to learn more about this social ill, raise awareness among others, and understand how everyone can help.
Hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, disabilities, restricted access to participation in the democratic process. These are just some of the many manifestations of poverty. More than 40 million Americans live in poverty, but we can eradicate poverty. As Nelson Mandela said, “Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the action of human beings.” https://nationaltoday.com/poverty-awareness-month/
During National Poverty Awareness Month (NPAM) may we take time to recognize the challenges of living in poverty and support those struggling to make ends meet. During NPAM, we can work together to raise awareness of poverty and its effects on individuals, families, and communities. We can also focus on solutions that help people living in poverty become self-sufficient and thrive. There are many ways to take action during NPAM. You can volunteer with local organizations, donate to programs that support those in need, and advocate for policy solutions to reduce poverty. Let’s come together to make a difference and create a brighter future for those affected by poverty.
“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”
Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Peace Prize 1964 acceptance speech
