You’re Worth More Than a Million Canaries.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.  But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

MAthew 10:29-31 ESV

As children of God, we do not have to be afraid of others, Jesus told His disciples. He even knows when a sparrow dies. A sparrow is not worth much, but He cares for them too. If God cares so much for these insignificant sparrows, how much more does He care for you?  He also knows what you need. God cares about you in so many ways that every hair on your head is counted. The Message translation of this verse says, What’s the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries. (Mathew 10:29-31MSG).

God is aware of everything that happens to you, and you will never find yourself in a situation from which He cannot save you. The fact that God protects His children does not, however, mean that you will never experience suffering. Nonetheless, God will be present in everything that happens to you. To God, His children are immensely more valuable than sparrows. Yet if He cares for them, He will most assuredly also care for us, His children.

Are not two sparrows … – He encourages them not to fear by two striking considerations: first, that God takes care of sparrows, the smallest and least valuable of birds; and, secondly, by the fact that God numbers even the hairs of the head. The argument is that if He takes care of birds of the least value, if He regards so small a thing as the hair of the head, and numbers it, He will certainly protect and provide for you. You need not, therefore, fear what man can do to you. -Bible Hub

We turn our devotion toward the One who is our help and our shield. We cast our anxiety on the One who cares for us. We remember that not even the sparrows are outside of the Father’s care. Nothing happens in this world that God does not see. God sees the sparrows, and God sees you and me, and He’s not just watching from a distance. He sees. He cares. He is near. There is a lot that you and I can’t see. No matter how smart or important we think ourselves to be, what we can see of the world is just a tiny sliver that is hardly worth mentioning. None of us can see even one second into the future, and that can feel terrifying.

But there is One who sees it all. The One who created it all and sustains it all. God sees it all, and He cares for you and me. We do not have to fear the unseen, because we can trust in the God who sees.

“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.” (Psalm 33:20-21)
