Are You Really In The Faith?

For even though He was crucified in weakness [yielding Himself], yet He lives [resurrected] by the power of God [His Father]. For we too are weak in Him [as He was humanly weak], yet we are alive and well [in fellowship] with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.

2 cORINTHIANS 13:4

Paul encouraged the church at Corinth to examine whether or not they had true faith. Paul wasn’t trying to give the Corinthians doubts regarding their salvation. He was, however, warning those in Corinth who had put their faith in the false doctrine being taught. He encouraged a period of self-examination and testing regarding the sincerity of their faith. Truth was the standard by which they were to measure themselves, which is found in God’s Word and observable in the life of Christ. For believers, such an examination should show evidence of Christ-like character and a desire to grow in their faith.

Test and evaluate yourselves to see whether you are in the faith and living your lives as [committed] believers. Examine yourselves [not me]! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves [by an ongoing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test and are rejected as counterfeit?

2 Corinthians 13:4 AMP

We’re prone to taking long looks in the mirror to determine what about our physical appearance needs attention. But when was the last time you examined yourself spiritually? Like the Corinthians, you need to be sure you have a true relationship with Christ, not just head knowledge about Him. What evidence of Jesus do you see in your life? Is your lifestyle consistent with the teachings of Scripture? Take a moment right now to look in a spiritual mirror. Do you see yourself as you truly are? Godly character will continue to develop as you read and apply the truth of God’s Word to your life.

“The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.”

 2 Corinthians 13:14, The Message

Test For Self-Examination

1. Am I habitually guilty of any known sin? Do I practice or allow myself in any thought, word, or deed which I know to be wrong?

2. Am I so the master of my bodily appetites as to have no condemnation? Do I allow myself in any indulgence that is injurious to my holiness, growth in knowledge, obedience, and usefulness?

3. Are my thoughts and feelings such that I should not be ashamed to hear them published before God?

4. Does the influence of the world cause me to act, feel, or say things that are unlike Christ?

5. Do my tempers cause me to act, or feel or say things that I see afterward are contrary to that love which I ought to bear always to those about me?

6. Am I doing all in my power for the salvation of sinners? Do I feel concern about their danger and pray and work for their salvation as if they were my children?

7. Am I fulfilling the vows I have made to God in my acts of consecration or at the penitent form?

8. Is my example in harmony with my profession? (‘profession’ being an archaic term for ‘my testimony’)

9. Am I conscious of any pride or haughtiness in my manner or bearing?

10. Do I conform to the fashions and customs of this world or do I show that I despise them?

11. Am I in danger of being carried away with worldly desires to be rich or admired? (’Test for Self-Examination’, from The Salvation Army’s Orders and Regulations for Soldiers, called CHOSEN TO BE A SOLDIER)

Daily Actions & Reflections: Take a moment right now to look in a spiritual mirror. Do you see yourself as you truly are? Godly character will continue to develop as you read and apply the truth of God’s Word to your life.

Daily Prayer: Father, we commend ourselves to you in like manner, understanding that afflictions will assault our mental, physical and spiritual beings, since we are mortals. By living in pursuit of truth and the nourishment of your Holy Word we can rise above our weaknesses and obtain fortitude through the power of your Spirit working within us.

Jesus was raised from the dead by your divine power and by his own power as God. He abides as man and Mediator, vested with all power in heaven and on earth. We are your children through Christ, who, having assumed his rightful power at your side, continues to assist and strengthen his ministers and ministry. He abides in us and we in him, and with renewed spirit we devote our lives in your service, in the name of Jesus. Amen
